Why cheap freelancers could cost you in the long run

If you’ve ever needed a one-off job done by a freelancer, the chances are you’ve been recommended a site such as Upwork or Fiverr. These types of sites are full of freelancers competing for work by offering the cheapest possible price and undervaluing both themselves, and the industry as a whole.

While they are certainly the cheapest way to get work done, they may end up costing you more in the long run. It’s not uncommon on Upwork to see someone offering a 500 word blog post for $5USD. That’s a pretty low per-word rate for a pretty low reward. The odds are high that this freelancer will be attempting to sign on as many clients as possible in order to maximise their profits. Your blog might be returned to you in record time, but to what standard? Have they taken the time to research your subject matter properly? Have they understood your tone of voice? Have they thoroughly proofread their content ensuring it’s engaging and leaves the reader with a clear call to action or an answer to their problem? I would wager that for $5, the answer is probably not. Most likely, it’s come straight from ChatGPT without a second look.

These freelancers are likely taking on so many clients that to them, you’re just a number. You send a brief and they may or may not deliver what you wanted. The next time you have a project that needs doing, you have to go through the whole process again – listing a job, vetting freelance prospects, explaining your business and the point of the content. Each listing becomes a pretty serious commitment of your time for varying degrees of results. On top of all that, each piece of content that’s written ends up being in a slightly different style which creates a disjointed feel in your content.

You might have spent $5 on the blog post, but the flow-on effects will cost you so much more.

Your time is precious – and you don’t have time to waste it! Wouldn’t it be great if you had a reliable freelancer on hand with proven experience in producing quality content? Someone you already have an established relationship with who understands your business style, tone and goals? Someone who invests the time and effort into your business that it deserves and wants to see it flourish just as much as you do?
